Distracted Driving Statistics

Have you ever taken a call while driving? How about sent a text? It seems innocent enough, right? After all, your eyes are only off the road for a second. It is more dangerous than you think.

Insurance Hunter has a new post geared to Stop Distracted Drivers, and it is a real eye opener. I didn't know that 8 out of 10 accidents are because of distracted driving.

We live in a world where everyone has GPS and a smartphone. We are so connected and so disconnected at the same time. 

Yes, it's great to keep in touch or check our directions, but what are we really doing?

A couple of years ago, there was a terrible accident in my city. Construction was being done on a bridge, and my husband was supposed to be working on the site. Several things slowed the project down, so his crew was not there the one day that if he had been, would have changed my life.

A young woman was texting while driving. Even though we have laws and fines for doing it, she was driving distracted. She drove over the bridge, and crashed on the ice below right where my husband should have been working. She didn't stand a chance, and died on the scene. This accident really affected me. She not only was endangering her life, but the lives of people she couldn't have know were there. I am so thankful no one else was hurt, and so heartbroken for her family. 

There are more affects than we realize. Even small "fender benders" cause insurance rates to rise. We all have to pay for it, one way or another.

We often don't think how our actions affect others. We don't see beyond what we want to see. even the best drivers can get distracted affecting their abilities. We owe it to our selves, and our families to stop distracted driving. If we don't, how can we expect other people to?
